A man identified as Darrius Woods is accused of robbing a 71-year-old and threatening his life after offering to assist him with his car, according to Memphis police.
Woods, 33, now faces charges of Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Kidnapping, Harassment, and Assault.
On the morning of May 31, the victim pulled his truck into a gas station on Poplar Avenue in the Med District due to battery issues.
Reports state that Darrius Woods approached the victim and offered to help. He then requested a ride in exchange for fixing the car.
The victim agreed, but once Woods got inside the vehicle, he began demanding money. Memphis Police say Woods forced the victim to drive to an ATM and withdraw cash.
Woods allegedly made off with $260.
Moments later, the victim exited the car with the key fob and his cell phone and called the police. Woods then put his hands in his pockets as if he had a gun.
On June 1, Woods called the victim, threatening to shoot up his home if he didn’t hand over the key fob, police say. He also texted the victim, saying, “Don’t let me catch you leaving out the house.”
On June 4, the victim identified Woods in a lineup.
Woods appeared for a video arraignment on Thursday morning and is scheduled for a bond hearing on Friday morning.
Police are still searching for the victim’s 2018 Nissan Titan.
