A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake, and an aftershock of 6.8 magnitude, struck central Myanmar at 12.50pm (local time) Friday. The epicentre was 16km northwest of the city of Sagaing, and at a depth of 10km, the United States Geological Survey said. There are no reports of casualties so far and no tsunami warning has been issued.

Tremors were felt as far away as northern Thailand, where some metro and rail services were suspended in Bangkok. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is holding an “urgent meeting” to review the crisis and has declared a state of ’emergency’ in the capital city.

Un potente terremoto de magnitud 7.7 y una réplica de magnitud 6.8 sacudieron el centro de Myanmar a las 12:50 p. m. (hora local) del viernes. El epicentro se ubicó a 16 km al noroeste de la ciudad de Sagaing, a una profundidad de 10 km, según informó el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos. Hasta el momento no se han reportado víctimas ni se ha emitido una alerta de tsunami.

Los temblores se sintieron incluso en el norte de Tailandia, donde algunos servicios de metro y tren fueron suspendidos en Bangkok. El primer ministro tailandés, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, está celebrando una reunión urgente para analizar la crisis y ha declarado el estado de emergencia en la capital.
