A Chicago police officer was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow cop during a South Side chase.
Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling on Saturday cautioned against a rush to judgment, after police confirmed Officer Krystal Rivera was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer Thursday night during a chase in the Chatham neighborhood.

Preliminary Statement on Police-Involved Shooting in the 8200 block of S. Drexel Avenue
On Thursday, June 5, 2025, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Chicago Police Department officers assigned to the 6th (Gresham) District Tactical Team were on patrol when they attempted to conduct an investigatory stop on a male suspect in the 8200 block of S. Drexel Avenue.
As officers approached, the suspect fled on foot into a nearby building. The officers pursued the suspect into the building, where they were confronted by an armed offender inside of the residence in which the offender fled. During the encounter, an officer discharged his weapon. The armed offender fled the residence and was taken into custody.
An officer sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to an area hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. An additional officer sustained an injury to the wrist and was taken to the hospital in fair condition. No additional injuries were reported.
Three firearms were located on scene. The Investigative Response Team is investigating and COPA was notified.
