San José Police Department Press Release Re: Lam Thanh Mac Arrest
On August 11, 2024, at approximately 3:18 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of a shooting at a business located in the 900 block of McLaughlin Avenue. Multiple reporting parties called police to report a shooting inside of the business. Upon arrival, Officers located an adult male victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Officers began emergency medical care and summoned paramedics to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The unknown suspect fled prior to police arrival.
The San José Police Department Homicide Unit responded to the scene and conducted a comprehensive investigation into the incident. During the course of the investigation, Detectives identified the primary suspect as Lam Thanh Mac and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Detectives learned the suspect had immediately left the area after the incident and was believed to have fled to the greater Las Vegas Metropolitan area of Nevada.
Thanks to the vigilance of our community and the widespread attention this case received through social media and news agencies, critical information was brought forward that led to a significant break in the case. We are deeply grateful to everyone who shared information, kept this case in the public eye, and supported the search for justice.
On June 19, 2025, members of the San José Police Department’s MERGE Unit, Covert Response Unit (CRU), and the entire Special Operations Division assisted in taking the suspect into custody. He was subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder.
The motive and circumstances surrounding the event are still under investigation.
The identity of the victim was released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office.
This was the City’s 20th homicide of 2024.

El 11 de agosto de 2024, aproximadamente a las 3:18 a. m., oficiales de patrulla del Departamento de PolicÃa de San José respondieron a un reporte de tiroteo en un negocio ubicado en la cuadra 900 de la Avenida McLaughlin. Varias personas denunciantes llamaron a la policÃa para reportar un tiroteo dentro del negocio. Al llegar, los oficiales localizaron a un hombre adulto con al menos una herida de bala. Los oficiales iniciaron la atención médica de emergencia y solicitaron paramédicos al lugar. La vÃctima fue trasladada a un hospital local, donde finalmente falleció a causa de sus heridas y fue declarada muerta.
El sospechoso desconocido huyó antes de la llegada de la policÃa.
La Unidad de Homicidios del Departamento de PolicÃa de San José acudió al lugar y realizó una investigación exhaustiva del incidente. Durante la investigación, los detectives identificaron al principal sospechoso como Lam Thanh Mac y obtuvieron una orden de arresto. Los detectives descubrieron que el sospechoso habÃa abandonado el área inmediatamente después del incidente y se cree que huyó al área metropolitana de Las Vegas, Nevada.

El 19 de junio de 2025, miembros de la Unidad MERGE, la Unidad de Respuesta Encubierta (CRU) y toda la División de Operaciones Especiales del Departamento de PolicÃa de San José ayudaron a detener al sospechoso. Posteriormente, fue ingresado en la Cárcel Principal del Condado de Santa Clara por asesinato.
El motivo y las circunstancias del suceso aún se investigan.
La Oficina Forense del Condado de Santa Clara reveló la identidad de la vÃctima.
Este fue el vigésimo homicidio en la ciudad en 2024.
