Our Nation Marks 43rd Anniversary of Beirut Barracks Bombing Attack

October 23, 2026 — The nation is marking the 43rd anniversary of the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing, one of the deadliest attacks against U.S. military personnel in decades.
On October 23, 1983, a suicide truck bomber struck the U.S. Marine barracks at Beirut International Airport in Lebanon, killing 241 American service members — 220 Marines, 18 Navy sailors and three Army soldiers.
The attack occurred amid heightened tensions and conflict in Lebanon, where U.S. forces were deployed as part of a multinational peacekeeping mission.
A second truck bomb struck a French military barracks nearby, killing 58 French paratroopers.
The Beirut bombing remains a defining tragedy in Marine Corps history. Each year, the anniversary serves as a time to honor the fallen service members, remember their sacrifice and recognize the families and fellow service members whose lives were forever changed by the attack.
