Critical Incident Community Briefing Officer Involved Shooting 12/1/23

The following information is preliminary and subject to change as this investigation continues. Here is relevant video which will provide you with a brief overview of the officer-involved shooting that occurred on 12/1/2023. This video is intended to help you better understand the circumstances that led to this incident.

On 12/1/23 at 11:19pm, officers from the Lansing Police Department were dispatched to the 1600 block of Massachusetts Avenue for a domestic violence situation. The caller reported the suspect Stephen Romero was armed and someone was shot.

When officers arrived at the scene they encountered an armed suspect. At that point, an officer involved shooting occurred.

Officers secured the suspect and rendered first aid. The Lansing Fire Department responded and transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. A handgun was recovered at the scene.

There were no other injuries.

The Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting. As the investigating agency, the Michigan State Police have possession of all evidence involved in this case. Once the Michigan State Police have completed their investigation into the shooting and there is no likelihood of impeding the criminal investigation, the Lansing Police Department will initiate its internal investigation into policy compliance.
