A man was fatally shot after allegedly attempting break-ins in northeast Harris County.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the front yard of a home in northeast Harris County around 6:55 a.m. The incident took place in the 14400 block of Brownsville Street.

Preliminary reports suggest that a man was knocking on doors, suspected of attempting break-ins. Multiple calls were made in the area, reporting someone kicking and pulling on doors while soliciting money. Authorities noted that the man was wearing gloves and carrying a backpack, which are often associated with individuals intending to commit robberies.

Footage from a Ring Doorbell captured the moments leading up to the man allegedly attempting to break into a family’s home.

A neighbor, Araceli Herrera, witnessed the events unfold and described the man’s suspicious behavior before approaching the neighbor’s property.

Deputies reported that a 14-year-old from one of the residences fired multiple shots, striking the individual outside. The wounded man was pronounced dead at the scene. The teenager’s parents were not present then, having left to drop off his siblings at school.

Herrera recounted the incident, stating that the teenager fired several shots after opening the door.

Following the shooting, the teenager handed the gun to his mother upon her arrival.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating whether the alleged intruder was attempting to break into the residence.

The victim, recognized by Homeless Outreach as a homeless individual in the area, is described as a Hispanic man in his late 20s or early 30s.

Law enforcement has secured the area as they conduct a thorough investigation. No charges have been filed, and the 14-year-old is cooperating with authorities. The case will be presented to a grand jury to determine whether the shooting was justified.

  1. I feel incredibly sorry for that boy. I can’t imagine the fear he must have felt to be placed in a position to feel the need to pick up a firearm and use it against a human being. Regardless of its justifiability, the scar left on a 14 year old kid from killing someone would be deep. I hope he gets over it.
