A surveillance camera captured a Hayward man confronting a would-be thief trying to steal his truck in the middle of the night.

A Hayward man was caught on surveillance camera confronting a would-be thief attempting to steal his truck in the dead of night.

Francis Jones and his wife received a notification from their surveillance system alerting them to activity in their truck at 2:30 a.m. last week.

Half awake and barefoot, Jones rushed outside to confront the intruders.

“I didn’t have a plan when I ran outside the door,” Jones admitted. “I just saw people in the car. I wasn’t going to let them go and take my stuff.”

The surveillance footage captured Jones pulling one suspect out of the truck and restraining him by the neck while urging his wife to contact the authorities. Suddenly, a second suspect discharged a single gunshot.

“I had the guy in front of me and I didn’t plan that,” Jones recounted. “I was just holding the guy a certain way. That’s when the guy tried to shoot at me. There was not much of me to hit because the guy was in front of me.”

It remains uncertain whether the man Jones restrained was struck by the bullet. Following the gunshot, the two suspects hastily retreated, leaping into their car and speeding away.
