On the evening of Monday April 22, 2024, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Samuel Aispuro was shot near the intersection of Barranca Street and North Garvey Avenue in the city of West Covina. At the time of the incident, Deputy Aispuro was in full uniform, stopped at a red light, while on a Sheriff’s Department motorcycle. He was in the area attending department training. Deputy Aispuro was able to radio for help and advise of a possible vehicle of interest, a four-door white sedan with tinted windows, headed westbound on the 10 freeway. Neighboring Sheriff’s Stations and local law enforcement agencies including, West Covina Police Department and Covina Police Department, responded to assist Deputy Aispuro.

Deputy Aispuro who is currently assigned to Century Station, was rushed to Pomona Valley Hospital via ambulance and is currently in stable condition. Fortunately, the bullet did not penetrate his bullet proof vest. Based on examination of his vest, he was only struck once.

It is unclear what led up to the shooting, but the Department remains dedicated to identifying the perpetrator(s) responsible for the shooting of Deputy Aispuro. Sheriff Luna clearly said, “If the person can shoot an officer in the back, he is not the kind of person we want on the streets, that’s why we are seeking the public’s assistance because we collectively need to get this person off the streets!”

There was initially a vehicle of interest that was stopped on the 600 block of Mangate Avenue in Valinda, the person(s) detained are currently being released. We are still in the initial stages of the investigation and our Homicide Bureau is working alongside West Covina Police Department to apprehend the suspect(s).

Anyone in the area of Barranca Avenue and East Garvey Avenue North in the city of West Covina at approximately 2:45 p.m. is urged to contact Homicide Bureau Detectives at (323) 890-5500.
