Five Police Officers Shot and Killed 4 Wounded in Shootout in Charlotte-Mecklenburg

Three U.S. Marshals and another CMPD officer were killed along with Officer Eyer.

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer, Joshua Eyer, died after a shooting that killed four other law enforcement officers.

Three members of the US Marshals Service and one Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer were shot and killed, three other Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were shot and injured, and another from an assisting agency was hurt during a US Marshals Task Force investigation in east Charlotte Monday afternoon.

Officer Joshua Eyer has passed away tonight from his injuries after being shot in the line of duty this afternoon while assisting other officers with the apprehension of a suspect.

Officer Eyer faithfully served the CMPD’s North Tryon Division for six years and was a member of the 178th Recruit Class.

We are forever indebted to Officer Eyer for his bravery and ultimate sacrifice. His life and service will never be forgotten. Please say a prayer for Officer Eyer’s loved ones during this difficult time.

Today, we tragically lost three U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force members in the line of duty. Five additional officers were struck by gunfire. This includes four CMPD officers and an additional officer from an assisting agency.

One of our CMPD officers is still in critical condition. The heroics actions of these officers are a testament to the dangers our law enforcement officers face daily. Today, some of our fellow colleagues made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety and protection of our community.

We are grateful for the bravery shown by all officers and outpouring responses from our neighboring agencies.

ACTIVE SCENE: The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, which is comprised of officers from multiple agencies, was conducting an investigation in the area of the 5000 block of Galway Drive in the North Tryon Division when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject.

Multiple law enforcement officers have been struck by the gunfire and are being transported to the hospital. The CMPD SWAT team is currently on the scene.

The threat is isolated to the area of the 5000 block of Galway Drive. We ask that residents in the neighborhood continue to shelter in place.

Please continue to avoid this area.
