Minneapolis Police Department Press Release Re: Officer Jamal Mitchell
Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell is a hero.
Yesterday, the Minneapolis Police Department lost Jamal, one of its finest, in the line of duty.
Jamal Mitchell was born February 12, 1988. He was a fiancé, a father and a son. He made the ultimate sacrifice protecting his city and community. His selfless actions will not be forgotten.
“Officer Jamal Mitchell, a hero, took his oath to the people of Minneapolis seriously—so seriously he sacrificed his life. When others run away from danger, police officers run towards it. Jamal literally went into a burning building on his third day as a police officer to save an elderly couple. That’s the kind of man he was,” said Minneapolis Chief of Police Brian O’Hara.
“We mourn his death. We grieve for his family. We must never forget, above all, Jamal Mitchell is a hero.”
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has identified the third person killed at the scene on Thursday evening as 35-year-old Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed on Saturday that Mohamed shot and killed Officer Jamal Mitchell.
Mohamed’s cause of death was determined to be multiple gunshot wounds.
Court records indicate that Mohamed had a criminal history dating back to 2006, with charges including burglary and firearms offenses.
