UPDATE: Officers responded to the area of 16th Street and McDowell Road around 6:25 p.m. following reports of a vehicle break-in.

When authorities arrived, the suspect fled on foot, jumping a wall as officers pursued. During the chase, the suspect opened fire on the officers.

“One officer was saved by his ballistic vest, while the second is fighting for his life,” Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan said during a press conference.

One of the officers returned fire but did not hit the suspect.

After shooting at the officers, the suspect continued to flee on foot. Aerial footage captured multiple street closures as officers searched for the suspect on Tuesday night.

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Saul Bal, was eventually apprehended. He has been booked into jail on multiple charges, including attempted murder.

“Our officers have encountered gunfire 11 times this year,” Chief Sullivan added. Police have confirmed there is no immediate threat to the community.

The investigation is ongoing.
