A San Jose neighborhood is channeling the power of video to combat property crimes through a free program offered by the city.

On Thursday, the city announced the distribution of free security cameras to business owners in Alum Rock.

During a press conference, officials showcased the 35 security camera systems that will be provided to businesses interested in receiving them. Each system includes four cameras.

The program cost the city $50,000.

Recently, at least four businesses near Alum Rock Avenue and White Road have been targeted. Peters’ Bakery has been hit multiple times in recent months, a tattoo parlor was robbed at gunpoint last month, and a cellphone store was broken into a few weeks ago.

Councilmember Peter Ortiz, alongside San Jose police, expressed hope that the free security cameras will help reduce crime in the area.

Dr. Hien Nguyen, president of the Alum Rock Village Business Association, noted that only 40 to 50% of businesses in the area currently have security cameras. She believes the additional cameras will enhance safety in the business district and encourage non-English-speaking business owners to report crimes more confidently.
