Former Texas Deputy Jonathan Bates Nunemaker Gets Probation For Assaulting Prisoner

Authorities say that former deputy Jonathan Bates Nunemaker shot the prisoner, in his eye, with a high-propulsion pepper spray gun.

A former Medina County Sheriff’s deputy was found guilty on Thursday of using a high-powered pepper spray gun at close range on a handcuffed man, leaving him seriously injured.

Jurors deliberated for less than an hour before convicting Jonathan Bates Nunemaker of two counts of aggravated assault by a public servant.

The trial revealed that at one point Nunemaker opened the rear driver’s side door of his patrol car and shouted at his prisoner, 17-year-old Branden Sanchez. Sanchez turned his head, allowing Nunemaker to fire his county-issued pepper spray gun into Sanchez’s left eye from approximately 3½ feet away, according to a statement from the Medina County District Attorney’s Office.

Sanchez says, he suffered permanent traumatic injuries to his eye, resulting in blindness that is unlikely to improve.

The jury sentenced Nunemaker to seven years of probation. If he violates the terms, he could face up to seven years in prison. Due to the conviction, Nunemaker is no longer eligible to hold a peace officer’s license.
