FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On October 4, 2024, at approximately 9:58 a.m., LVMPD officers responded to the 200 block of East Tropicana Avenue regarding a male and female refusing to leave a business and making threats to employees.
Officers Trenzel Allen and Anthony Salinas arrived in the parking lot and located the individuals involved. The male, who was later identified as 37-year-old Percy Hawkins, appeared to be agitated and Officer Allen immediately recognized he was armed with a knife.
As Officer Allen opened his patrol car door, Hawkins charged towards him. Officer Allen ordered Hawkins to drop the knife. Hawkins did not comply causing Officer Allen to discharge his duty weapon as Hawkins ran up to his door.
While still armed with the knife, Hawkins ran from Officer Allen, directly towards Officer Salinas, causing him to discharge his duty weapon. Officer Salinas attempted to create distance while Hawkins continued to chase him. Hawkins then collapsed on the ground where he was taken into custody. Medical personnel responded and transported Hawkins to UMC where he was later pronounced deceased.
The cause and manner of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation of this incident remains ongoing. An examination of this incident is being conducted by the LVMPD Critical Incident Review Team. This review focuses on policy, tactics, and training as it relates to this use of force.
