Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Press Release Re: Fatal Shooting of Cesar Reyes II
Sheriff Kevin McMahill
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On December 8, 2024, at approximately 5:05 p.m., LVMPD Communications received a call reference a suicidal male, who was later identified as 26-year-old Cesar Reyes II, inside of a hotel room located in the 9700 block of South Las Vegas Boulevard. Prior to officers arriving, hotel security attempted to conduct a welfare check on Reyes but received no response at the door. Security then attempted to enter the room and heard what they believe to be the racking of a firearm.
LVMPD officers arrived and attempted to contact Reyes but were unsuccessful. The incident was classified as a barricade and SWAT and crisis negotiators were dispatched to the scene. Reyes did not respond despite numerous attempts by crisis negotiators to establish communication with him.
After several hours with no response, SWAT officers utilized an explosive breach to gain entry into the hotel room. Reyes exited the room armed with a shotgun and attempted to flee down the hallway. At some point, he charged toward Officer Zachary Adam and his partner. Officers issued several verbal commands to drop the weapon, which Reyes ignored. He continued to advance toward officers causing Officer Adam to discharge his weapon, striking him.
Officers rendered aid until medical personnel arrived who pronounced Reyes deceased at the scene.
An examination of this incident is being conducted by the LVMPD Critical Incident Review Team. This review focuses on policy, tactics, and training as it relates to this use of force.
