Battling LA wildfires: Nearly 800 to 1,000 incarcerated prison inmates, including female inmates form the backbone of the firefighting force.
Multiple wildfires continue to burn out of control across the Los Angeles area. The death toll now stands at ten, but officials warn that number could rise as investigators make their way through affected neighborhoods. More than 1000 buildings have been destroyed, including homes, schools, supermarkets and businesses. President Joe Biden has called the fires the most widespread and devastating in California’s history.
Out of the thousands of personnel mobilized to combat the wildfires, 800-1,000 are prison inmates deployed by California’s Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
