The San Francisco D.A. is accusing a judge of handing down a light sentence in an armed robbery spree case.
It’s perhaps the most important debate underway in San Francisco right now – how to combat crime. District Attorney Brooke Jenkins is spotlighting yet another judge who, she says, is letting a dangerous criminal off easy, telling the I-Team, “We are dealing with a culture in our courthouse of judges being excessively lenient.” But Public Defender Elizabeth Camacho argues the defendant deserves another chance, saying “He had no prior convictions, no record.”

The DA’s statement destroys the public trust in our system. If she has a gripe with the Judge, there are means available to address the dispute privately. The courts should not be subject to political pressure. We rely on our judges to be fair and free from public ridicule. Nobody gets it right every time. If we, in the courts make judgements based on how it looks in the papers, we might as well have no courts at all. We should not vote for a judge because she or he locks people up or lets people out. We want wisdom and judgement free of public intervention. Sounds like people would prefer public lynchings!
Sounds like you need to be robbed at gunpoint and see if you enjoy your perp getting 10 hours of community service!
