Police in Akron, Ohio, have released body-worn camera video of officers shooting 15-year-old Tavion Koonce-Williams, who had a toy gun. The teenager survived being shot in the wrist, and the officer has been placed on leave.
On Monday, April 1, 2024, around 7:04 p.m., the communications center received a report from a citizen regarding a 15-year-old boy seen in the vicinity of Newton St. and Tonawanda Ave. allegedly wielding a gun. The caller stated that the individual was pointing the firearm at houses. Approximately seven minutes later, at 7:11 p.m., a responding officer spotted a person matching the description provided by the caller walking on Brittain Rd. and Ottawa. The officer halted his marked police vehicle to conduct an investigation. Upon exiting the patrol car, the officer swiftly commanded the male to reveal his hands.
Within moments, the officer discharged his firearm once, injuring the male in the hand, after observing what appeared to be a gun in the individual’s possession. Following the shooting, law enforcement secured the area as a crime scene and administered immediate first aid, including applying a tourniquet to the male’s arm. Subsequently, the subject was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury. The officer involved in the incident is a 9-year veteran of the department and has been placed on paid administrative leave pending further investigation.
