Aurora police share footage of officers firing at shooting suspect Jose Luis Rodriguez-Balderrama.
The Aurora Police Department released body-worn camera footage and a full narrative of an incident from May 4 where officers shot and killed shooting suspect Jose Luis Rodriguez-Balderrama.
On Saturday, May 4, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., Aurora patrol officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Clinton Street after multiple callers reported gunfire and a man with a nonfatal gunshot wound to the leg. The suspect, 28-year-old Aurora resident Jose Luis Rodriguez-Balderrama, fled the scene in a red Ford Mustang. Officers spotted the Mustang and briefly pursued it but eventually lost sight of the vehicle.
While some officers continued the search for the suspect, others arrived at the original scene and found the victim, a 29-year-old Aurora man. He reported that Rodriguez-Balderrama, a friend, had arrived at his apartment earlier that evening. Rodriguez-Balderrama, sitting on the victim’s couch, pointed a gun at his own head. The victim and another resident fled when Rodriguez-Balderrama produced the handgun. Rodriguez-Balderrama then fired several shots, striking the victim in the leg. The other resident was unharmed. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
As the victim spoke with officers, neighbors alerted them that Rodriguez-Balderrama had returned. Officers quickly located him near the victim’s apartment, still armed with a handgun. Despite commands to show his hands, Rodriguez-Balderrama did not comply, and officers fired, striking him multiple times. A .40-caliber handgun was recovered at the scene.
Aurora Fire Rescue performed lifesaving measures, but the suspect was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
