Dec 8, 2023 BERKELEY

On November 6th, 2023, at approximately 5:26 a.m., officers were dispatched to an auto burglary involving three suspects breaking into a vehicle on Grayson Street and 7th Street. Berkeley Police officers responded to the area and encountered the suspects. One of the suspects was detained by an officer on the sidewalk as two additional suspects attempted to flee the area in an SUV.

One of our officers followed the SUV and attempted an investigative stop, but the SUV continued to flee. The roadway was blocked by patrol vehicles; the SUV then reversed, ramming an officer’s patrol vehicle. The driver of the SUV then drove onto the sidewalk, nearly hitting two officers, the detained suspect, and an uninvolved pedestrian. The officer on the sidewalk discharged his firearm, striking the driver of the SUV.

Berkeley Police officers rendered medical aid until relieved by the Berkeley Fire Department. The driver of the SUV, later identified as 39-year-old David Bonino, was transported to Highland Hospital, where he later died.

The female passenger of the SUV was placed under arrest for numerous charges. The male suspect, who was on the sidewalk, was also placed under arrest.

This ongoing investigation is led by the Berkeley Police Department Homicide Division and Internal Affairs Bureau. Per standard protocol, a concurrent investigation is being conducted by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
