A UPS truck was looted by 12 to 15 people after its roof was damaged by a viaduct in the Little Village neighborhood.

Police say that a mob of at least a dozen people looted a UPS tractor-trailer on Chicago’s Southwest Side Thursday morning after a crash.

Around 10:46 a.m. in the 2100 block of South Kedzie Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood, the truck’s roof was ripped off while attempting to pass under a viaduct, setting off a chain of unusual events.

The truck, traveling north on Kedzie Avenue just past Cermak Road, struck the viaduct, causing significant damage. It was then moved near the CTA Pink Line station at 21st and Kedzie, where a group of 12 to 15 individuals seized the opportunity to steal packages from the damaged vehicle, according to police.

A UPS spokesperson issued a statement: “We are aware of a situation involving one of our drivers that occurred this morning. We are cooperating with the responding authorities in their investigation and respectfully defer questions about this incident to them.”

The UPS driver was not injured in the incident, but the number of stolen packages remains unknown. No arrests or citations have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
