The Colorado State Patrol released a timeline of events during a highway shootout in which CSP officials say a trooper was “ambushed” before returning fire and killing the suspect.

The Colorado State Patrol has released a timeline of events detailing a highway shootout in which a trooper was “ambushed” but managed to return fire, ultimately killing the suspect. Multiple angles of video footage show the entire incident lasted less than a minute.

The shooting took place on September 7 along Highway 36, just west of Federal Boulevard in Westminster, a Denver suburb. Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Tye Simcox was in his patrol car, parked in the center median, filling out paperwork when a man, later identified as 32-year-old Victor Anthony De Santiago from California, approached and began shooting into Simcox’s vehicle.

De Santiago then pulled over, got out of his car, and continued firing his handgun at the trooper. Despite being shot in the arm, Simcox retrieved a patrol rifle from his vehicle and returned fire, killing De Santiago.
