Questions remain surrounding the death of 2 children sleeping in a Detroit parking garage.

There are lots of questions surrounding the deaths of Darnell Currie, 9, and his sister A’Millah Currie, 2, after the children died from what police believe was exposure to hypothermia.

The mother was inside the van, along with her five children, when she noticed that one of the kids wasn’t breathing. The godmother came and picked up the children, transporting them to the hospital, after which Detroit police were called. It’s believed that two of them froze to death.

Statement from Deputy Mayor Melia Howard providing an update on the latest with the Williams/Currie family following the tragic death of their two children

Feb 13, 2025

Deputy Mayor

Since Tuesday, I have been working closely alongside the Williams/Currie family and the New McFall Funeral Home to support them as we prepare to honor the lives of Darnell and Amillah Currie.

The City has been deeply involved in coordinating every detail of the visitation and funeral services, with the goal of easing as much of the burden on the family as possible during this heartbreaking time. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of many local businesses and individuals, all aspects of the services, including the repast, are being provided at no cost to the family—ensuring they can focus on their healing without the added worry of financial strain.

Additionally, our Department of Housing & Revitalization is working diligently to secure stable housing for the family. We are hopeful that we will have them settled into a safe and comfortable home by this weekend.

On Tuesday, Mayor Duggan and Chief Bettison held a press briefing to address the situation. We understand there are many questions, but both the 14-day administrative review and the DPD investigation are still ongoing. We remain committed to transparency and will share updates as soon as the investigations are complete and we have a full understanding of the facts.

Our hearts remain with the Williams/Currie family as they navigate this unimaginable loss. We continue to hold them close in our thoughts and stand with them every step of the way.
