Chief Kevin Davis Released Body Camera Footage from the Attempted Murder of Officers in Fair Oaks

Fairfax County, VA- Today, the body camera footage from the attempted murder of officers in Fair Oaks on April 23 was released. The following information is based on the preliminary and ongoing investigation. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed. The video will be posted on the Department’s YouTube page. Fair Oaks Police District – The criminal and administrative investigations continue into the April 23 officer-involved shooting in the 4000 block of Majestic Lane near Greenbriar.

Jamal Wali, 36, of Fairfax, refused to obey the officer’s commands during a traffic stop, reached for a firearm, and shot two officers. Officer Ian Lachapelle, a 2-year veteran of the department, then discharged his firearm. Wali was taken to an area hospital and pronounced deceased. Officer Lachapelle is assigned to the Fair Oaks Police District. He is on restricted-duty status while the investigation continues.

The body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days of the incident, according to the department’s guidelines.

Fair Oaks Police District – Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau continue to investigate yesterday’s officer-involved shooting, where two officers were shot by an armed man near Greenbriar.

Yesterday, at 2:36 p.m., an officer was conducting traffic enforcement in the 4000 block of Majestic Lane near Greenbriar. The officer stopped a 1999 Toyota Corolla driven by Jamal Wali, 36, of Fairfax. Wali was argumentative and refused to obey commands. Backup was called and once on scene, Wali reached for a firearm and shot two officers. A third officer discharged his weapon, striking Wali four times.

Responding officers quickly began performing life-saving measures on the two officers and the suspect. The two officers were transported in non-life-threatening condition to local hospitals. Wali was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The officer involved in the shooting has been identified as a 2-year veteran assigned to the Fair Oaks Patrol District. As per department policy, the officer has been placed on restricted duty status, pending the outcome of the criminal and administrative investigation.

The criminal investigation into use-of-force is being conducted by the Major Crimes Bureau. The body-worn camera footage will be released within 30 days in accordance with the Department’s policy. The results of the criminal investigation will be presented to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.

Our Internal Affairs Bureau is conducting an administrative investigation in accordance with policy, along with a review by the Independent Police Auditor. The officer’s name will be released within 10 days in accordance with the Department’s policy.
