Giovanny Aldama Garcia has been arrested following the alleged discovery of a dog tied to a pole in deep water along Interstate 75, just before Hurricane Milton struck Florida.

A viral video captured the moment the dog, now named Trooper after being rescued by the Florida Highway Patrol, was saved and is now safe, according to state officials.

State Attorney Suzy Lopez announced that Garcia faces multiple charges, including aggravated animal cruelty.

Leon County Humane Society Press Release

Trooper Update:

We are aware that Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office’s Chad Chronister, State Attorney Suzy Lopez, and many other law enforcement agencies are pursuing animal cruelty charges against Trooper’s prior owner.

We can appreciate that many are following this case closely and may have questions, however, this is an ongoing investigation and is not within our organization’s authority. Our job is to find Trooper and other animals in our program the best home possible for them. We will update if any information becomes available to share. We trust law enforcement to handle that side of Trooper’s story.

Thank you again to FHP Trooper Morales for rescuing this sweet dog. Trooper is in foster care with a wonderful family who has breed experience. In this home he will continue to decompress and enjoy all the good things in life. His foster parents will learn more about him and have his best interests at heart. Fosters have first opportunity to adopt, but if they find that their household isn’t ideal for Trooper, we’ll start looking for the perfect fit based on his foster’s recommendations. We ask that you respect the privacy of our foster families.

Thank you to everyone who has followed his story, for caring and advocating for those with no voice. We stress that there are thousands of dogs who deserve this same level of attention, care, and advocacy, and hope that Trooper’s situation inspires a kinder future for all dogs.

Please visit your local shelters and support your local rescues. There could be a dog right up the road who needs you, and Trooper is more than willing to take credit for bringing you together.

If you’re local, join us at a dog adoption event this Saturday at Proctor Subaru Tallahassee for the Subaru Loves Pets: Adoption Event & Pet Festival.

If you’d like to support our organization and help us continue to save more dogs like Trooper, donations can be made securely through our website at www.leoncountyhumane.org/donate
