About 4,800 terrified residents were moved to shelters by hundreds of police officers and Army soldiers because of fear derived from the threats, extortion and violence exercised by that group.

Residents told reporters that they were being extorted to pay protection money to gunmen under threat of death or having their homes burned down.

Surveillance video shows gunmen setting fire to houses, including two of Municipal officials, allegedly due to the results of the municipal elections on June 2.

This was the largest displacement of refugees in Mexico since the 1994 Chiapas uprising of indigenous people.
