FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On March 13, 2024, LVMPD dispatch received reports of a male, later identified as 29-year-old Ismael Castillo who was armed with a knife and attempting to carjack a victim in the parking lot of a retail store in the 4000 block of South Maryland Parkway. After the robbery, Castillo ran into the store where he stole and armed himself with a second knife. Castillo then exited the store and ran toward the 1000 block of Flamingo Road.
Sergeant Brett Brosnahan along with additional officers arrived in the area and located Castillo still armed with a knife. Officers exited their vehicles and ordered Castillo to drop the knife. While Sergeant Brosnahan was directing arriving officers to deploy less-lethal options, Castillo charged at him, causing the sergeant to discharge his firearm, striking Castillo.
Medical personnel responded and pronounced Castillo deceased at the scene.
The investigation of this incident remains ongoing. An examination of this incident is being conducted by the LVMPD Critical Incident Review Team. This review focuses on policy, tactics, and training as it relates to this use of force.
