On June 25th, 2024, at approximately 9:42 a.m., LVMPD’s Communication Center received a call from a citizen regarding a male, later identified as 41-year-old Matthew Tindall, who had broken into a residence while armed with a knife. In that call, the citizen was heard saying “He’s going to kill us!”. The call was generated as a STAR protocol and patrol officers were dispatched.
Officer Rodriguez was the first to arrive and contacted residents that live on Valley Drive who said that Tindall was in their backyard but had left. An additional officer arrived with a low lethal shotgun. Within minutes of arriving, both officers heard yelling for help from a neighboring residence on Valley Drive.
Both officers ran to the home and saw three individuals outside the front door. Tindall was in the doorway in a physical altercation with another male and was holding a knife. After issuing Tindall verbal commands, he dropped the knife, but then bent down and started to reach for it. Officer Rodriguez discharged his firearm, striking Tindall.
Shortly after, the suspect was taken into custody and medical aid was provided.
The investigation of this incident remains ongoing. An examination of this incident is being conducted by the LVMPD Critical Incident Review Team. This review focuses on policy, tactics, and training as it relates to this use of force.
