A chaotic and violent incident unfolded in downtown Los Angeles early Sunday morning when a man stole an LAPD patrol car with an officer still inside, leading to a multi-vehicle collision.

The incident began around 3:30 a.m. near 12th and Figueroa streets, where a female officer was on a security detail. According to LAPD Lt. James Mylonakis, the suspect approached the officer, entered her patrol vehicle, and drove off. During the theft, the officer was “ejected” from the SUV and fell onto the road.

The suspect sped northbound on Figueroa Street, colliding with at least two vehicles at the intersection of 8th Street before crashing into a pole. He attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by police.

Several individuals, including the officer, sustained injuries, though none were life-threatening.

Authorities closed the area around 8th and Figueroa for several hours to investigate, interview witnesses, and clear the wreckage and debris.
