Mesa park rangers allegedly targeted the homeless, used racial slurs, and shared a ‘Goon Squad’ patch.
ABC 15 Arizona reports that the City of Mesa has confirmed that multiple park rangers have been placed on administrative leave amid a criminal investigation into allegations of misconduct while on duty.
According to police records, the rangers are accused of targeting unhoused individuals, using racial slurs directed at African Americans, and circulating a patch labeled “Goon Squad.”

STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO CLAIMS OF MISCONDUCT BY MEMBERS OF THE MESA PARK RANGERS UNIT
“I am extremely disappointed and deeply concerned by the misconduct uncovered within the Mesa Park Rangers Unit. The behavior described in the initial investigation is reprehensible and in direct conflict with the City of Mesa’s values of integrity, accountability, and public trust.
“The City responded immediately to these serious allegations, launching an independent investigation, placing multiple individuals on administrative leave, and transferring oversight of the Park Rangers Unit to the Mesa Police Department. These are the right first steps toward restoring accountability and trust.
“Misconduct and abuse of public responsibility will not be tolerated. I will continue to work closely with City leadership to ensure full transparency, implement stronger oversight and training protocols, and take any action necessary to ensure this never happens again.
“Mesa residents deserve nothing less than a professional and ethical city workforce, and I am committed to helping rebuild the community’s trust in our institutions.”

“Estoy sumamente decepcionada y profundamente preocupada por la mala conducta descubierta en la Unidad de Guardaparques de Mesa. El comportamiento descrito en la investigación inicial es reprensible y contradice directamente los valores de integridad, responsabilidad y confianza pública de la Ciudad de Mesa.
“La Ciudad respondió de inmediato a estas graves acusaciones, iniciando una investigación independiente, suspendiendo administrativamente a varias personas y transfiriendo la supervisión de la Unidad de Guardaparques al Departamento de Policía de Mesa. Estos son los primeros pasos correctos para restablecer la responsabilidad y la confianza.
No se tolerará la mala conducta ni el abuso de responsabilidad pública. Seguiré trabajando estrechamente con los líderes de la ciudad para garantizar la transparencia total, implementar protocolos de supervisión y capacitación más rigurosos, y tomar las medidas necesarias para garantizar que esto no vuelva a suceder.
