Morgan Hill Police Department Press Release Re: Shaun Hillman Shooting
Advisory Update: Assault with a Deadly Weapon Suspect Arrested
This information is being provided based on the information as we know it currently.
On April 18, 2025, just after midnight, Morgan Hill Police Officers responded to a disturbance involving a male subject inside the Safeway Store, located at 840 E. Dunne Avenue. The male subject, later identified as Shaun Hillman, 40 years old, from Van Nuys, was reported to be carrying a large kitchen knife and wine bottle and was not responsive to employees when asked to leave. When Morgan Hill Police Officers arrived on the scene, they asked Hillman multiple times to drop the knife, which he refused and ran about the store armed with both the knife and the wine bottle. Officers evacuated the store, called for additional police officers, and continued de-escalation strategies with Hillman.
As officers walked down an aisle, they located a victim bleeding from a head wound. The victim reported being stabbed by Hillman; however, it was later determined Hillman struck the victim on the head with a wine bottle and stole the victim’s box cutter. After several minutes of attempting to gain Hillman’s cooperation using de-escalation techniques, he charged toward officers and threw a volley of wine bottles in rapid succession at them. An officer discharged their firearm at Hillman. He continued to ignore lawful commands while advancing and attacking the officer with wine bottles and other unidentified objects. He again charged an officer, and the officer was forced to shoot him to prevent being attacked. Hillman continued to resist until he was subdued by a team of officers.
The officers immediately rendered first aid to Hillman before he was transported to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries. The victim was also transported to the hospital for a head injury, and no officers were injured in this incident.
Morgan Hill Police Department will release a critical incident video as soon as possible with the intention of releasing the video within 30 days of the incident.
