The family of Maria Ramos is heartbroken after she was fatally shot after confronting a group of suspected drug dealers, in an effort to protect her children.

Oakland police have arrested an adult male and two teenagers in connection with the fatal shooting of a mother of eight who confronted alleged drug dealers outside her home earlier this month.

The Oakland Police Department made the announcement during a press conference late Friday morning. The victim, Maria Ramos, was fatally shot in East Oakland on August 7th.

The shooting occurred in the afternoon on the 5600 block of Hilton Street. Officers responded around 2:30 p.m. and found Ramos suffering from at least one gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

As CBS News Bay Area reported earlier this week, the incident unfolded when Ramos and her mother confronted a group in a car suspected of dealing drugs near the intersection of Hilton Street and Bancroft Avenue. Police said one of the people in the vehicle shot Ramos.

Newly obtained surveillance footage captured the shooting. The video shows the suspects in a sedan and Ramos, who had exited her SUV, approaching them. They opened fire immediately, with the passenger firing additional shots as Ramos tried to run away.

On Friday, Oakland police detailed how they quickly apprehended the suspects, identifying a young adult male and two teenage boys, who were arrested within 12 hours of the shooting.

“Within minutes, our patrol team and special resources team sprang into action, identifying the vehicle, locating it, and swiftly taking three suspects into custody,” said Deputy Chief of Police Frederick Shavies.

Police did not release the name of the adult arrested in the case.

The death of the 33-year-old mother, who leaves behind eight children ranging in age from 1 to 15, has left her family devastated.
