New Mexico State Police Fatally Shoot Jesus Rubio During Traffic Stop in Hobbs.
On Monday night, New Mexico State Police (NMSP) officers shot and killed a man during a traffic stop near East Marland Boulevard and South Fowler Street in Hobbs, according to NMSP Chief Troy Weisler.
Weisler stated that officers pulled over a white Dodge Charger just after 6 p.m. Shortly after initiating the stop, an altercation occurred, prompting two officers to discharge their duty weapons, fatally striking Jesus Rubio of Las Cruces, NM.
According to NMSP, Rubio eventually stopped his vehicle and opened the door. Officers instructed him to remain inside, but he ignored their commands and exited. Upon exiting, Rubio kept his right hand behind his back despite repeated orders to show his hands.
Authorities say Rubio then raised his arms in a manner resembling someone aiming a firearm as he advanced toward the officers. At this point, both officers fired at least one round, striking Rubio.
Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and transported Rubio to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
No officers were injured in the incident, and no firearm was recovered from the scene.
An investigation remains ongoing.
