Newark, New Jersey, Department of Public Safety Press Release Re: Fatal Shooting of Newark Police Officer Joseph Azcona

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. joined Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens and the Newark Police Division’s county, state, and federal law enforcement partners in announcing the arrest of a 14-year-old male in connection with the fatal shooting of Newark Police Officer Joseph Azcona, 26, who was fatally shot in Newark’s North Ward on Friday, March 7, 2025.

A second Newark Police Detective was injured and is reportedly in stable condition.
