The man suspected of shooting a trooper Friday in Kent carried a lengthy criminal background and had a warrant out for his arrest in Pierce County.

Jason Posada, 31, was charged with first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement, unlawful possession of a firearm, and theft of a firearm after allegedly shooting a Washington State Patrol trooper multiple times on Friday in Kent after the trooper attempted to pull Posada over on State Route 167 for a suspected DUI just before midnight.

Posada remains in King County jail on $3 million bail and is set to be arraigned on March 4.

The suspect accused of shooting a trooper in Kent on Friday, Jason Posada, 31, had a significant criminal history and an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Pierce County.

Posada faces charges of first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement, unlawful possession of a firearm, and theft of a firearm after allegedly shooting a Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper multiple times during a suspected DUI stop on State Route 167 just before midnight.

Currently held in King County jail on $3 million bail, Posada is scheduled for arraignment on March 4. Charging documents reveal that Posada collided with another vehicle on the 1600 block of West James Place and attempted to flee on foot. When the trooper intervened, shots were exchanged. Witnesses reported seeing a struggle before the gunfire erupted.

The wounded trooper, a 21-year veteran of the state patrol assigned to the Enumclaw detachment, sustained nine gunshot wounds and was transported to Harborview Medical Center.

Kent police, aided by K-9 units and air support, apprehended Posada near an apartment complex. A woman allegedly associated with Posada was also taken into custody.

Posada had a history of run-ins with the law and was previously bailed out of jail in June by the Northwest Community Bail Fund. This fund aims to mitigate the negative impacts of the cash bail system by providing bail for individuals awaiting trial.

His criminal record includes convictions for robbery, assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, and attempted burglary, among others. He was released from the Department of Corrections in December but had outstanding warrants for his arrest in both Pierce County and from the DOC.
