RCMP Cleared in Shootout with Suspected Gunman Austin Desylva Caught on Camera

Suspect Austin Desylva was charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer and discharging a firearm with intent.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police report that an officer has been cleared after firing his gun 25 times at Austin Desylva during a shootout in Canmore, Alberta.

The RCMP says that the mountie was working a DUI checkpoint when he saw a suspect vehicle approaching and then turned around to avoid the checkpoint.

The mountie reportedly followed the suspect and tried to stop him but he failed to stop and began to flee. The mountie pursued the suspect briefly and then turned off his emergency lights and siren.

Police say the video shows the suspect then fired a gun at the mountie, striking his windshield.

The mountie pursued the suspect who continued to shoot and the mountie.

Police say that the suspect fled until he drove into a cul de sac dead end and was trying to gain tire traction in the snow as the mountie fired his gun at the suspect.

Police report that the suspect fled from his car and was later found injured and frostbitten after a ground search.

RCMP reported that the suspect Austin Desylva was charged with aggravated assault of a peace officer and discharging a firearm with intent.

Records show that at the time of the shootout, the suspect was also facing multiple charges following a joint firearms and drug bust by Banff and Canmore RCMP at a residence on 129 Silvertip Ridge on February 4, 2023.

During the raid, officers seized three shotguns—two of which were loaded—along with two loaded handguns, several rounds of ammunition, 260 grams of cocaine, and $800 in Canadian currency.
