An autopsy report obtained by KOAT determined that Merrifield died from the toxic effects of fentanyl and alcohol.

His death was ruled accidental.

A toxicology analysis by the Office of the Medical Investigator revealed elevated levels of fentanyl in Merrifield’s system, along with alcohol, caffeine, and erectile dysfunction medication.

A medical expert told KOAT the findings suggest Merrifield may have taken a Viagra-like drug approximately four hours before his death.

The report also indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.071, just under the legal limit of 0.08. However, experts noted his BAC was likely higher at the time of death, as the testing occurred a day later.

Sheriff Merrifield was discovered deceased in his patrol vehicle at his residence on April 20, following a minor crash.
