On Friday, a gas station manager in Oakland expressed deep frustration and anger after his business was ransacked overnight, compounded by what he described as a lack of police response despite his call for help.

The incident occurred at The 76 Station on Hegenberger Road, near Interstate 880, not far from the airport. Around 4:30 a.m., a crowd from a nearby sideshow broke into the station and began looting.

According to station manager Sam Mardaie, approximately 80 to 100 individuals participated in the vandalism. They reportedly became agitated because they were only offered service through the station’s windows, which was standard practice during the late hours.

Mardaie estimates the damages and losses exceed $100,000.

When questioned about the delay in police response, Oakland police initially categorized the incident as a Priority 2 burglary due to the absence of suspects at the scene. The manager was advised to file a report using online crime reporting.

Subsequently, video evidence highlighting the scale and specifics of the incident, including the large number of perpetrators, was provided to OPD. This prompted an immediate upgrade of the incident to Priority 1 status, leading to police dispatching an officer to the scene.

This incident adds to a string of challenges along the Hegenberger corridor in Oakland.
