Gunfire shattered the peace at a Philadelphia park during an Eid al-Fitr event commemorating the end of Ramadan, leaving three people wounded and five individuals in custody.
The incident unfolded around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday near Clara Muhammad Square, located at 47th Street and Wyalusing Avenue in the Parkside section, as approximately 1,000 attendees gathered to celebrate.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel disclosed that the gunfire erupted as two factions clashed within the park, resulting in the discharge of around 30 shots.
Amid the chaos, an officer confronted a 15-year-old male suspect brandishing a firearm, ultimately injuring him in the shoulder and leg. The officer swiftly secured the weapon and transported the teen to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Authorities revealed that the teen was armed with a rifle, although it remains unclear whether he discharged the weapon.
The officer involved in the shooting has been reassigned to administrative duties pending the completion of the investigation.
A total of five firearms were recovered from the scene, leading to the apprehension of five suspects, comprising four males and one female, ranging in age from 15 to 21 years old.
