A young child has died after being shot on Interstate 880 Saturday evening between Fremont and Milpitas, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Santa Cruz Police report they have stopped a suspect vehicle, arrested three people and recovered a gun.

Last night, around 9:32 pm, Officer Caposio spotted a vehicle near Ocean St and Water St associated with possibly two shootings that occurred earlier in Fremont and Bay Area. One shooting involved the death of a child.
Our patrol officer requested backup, followed the vehicle onto Hwy 17, and initiated a car stop when other patrol cars were nearby. The vehicle did not yield, and a pursuit was initiated.
During the pursuit on Hwy 17, officers observed the vehicle’s occupants discarding a firearm from the car.
The suspect driver stopped a short distance later. CHP and Scotts Valley PD assisted with the high-risk car stop. SCPD Officers safely took three occupants into custody.
After an extensive search, the firearm was located with help from the Scotts Valley PD K9 team, which recovered the gun near the Mount Hermon exit.
SCPD handed over all three arrestees to Fremont Police Department for their case.

April 8, 2023, Shooting Investigation Update
On April 8, 2023, at approximately 6:37 p.m., Fremont Police Department responded to and investigated a shooting that appeared on the 37000 block of Fremont Blvd. A preliminary investigation suggested that the shooting could be gang-related. The victim was not injured, and no community members were injured in the incident. The suspect vehicle fled the scene before police arrival. This case is still under investigation, and we appreciate any video surveillance or possible eyewitness statements from the community.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) is also investigating a shooting on Interstate I-880 that occurred on the same evening on April 8, 2023. It is unknown at this time whether the shootings are related or involve the same subjects.
Fremont Police is in contact with CHP investigators regarding the incidents. Please contact CHP for additional information about the I-880 shooting, as Fremont PD is not the lead agency.
