Historic Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest Severely Damaged by Fire; 33-Year-Old Suspect Arrested
BERCHTESGADEN, GERMANY — October 24, 2026 — A massive fire has severely damaged the historic Eagle’s Nest, Adolf Hitler’s Nazi-era mountaintop retreat in the Bavarian Alps, as German authorities investigate suspected arson and the possible political motivation behind the blaze.
The fire erupted Friday evening, October 23, at the Kehlsteinhaus, overlooking Berchtesgaden. Flames engulfed portions of the building as firefighters battled the blaze at the remote mountain location.
Photographs taken Saturday revealed extensive damage, including heavily burned sections of the roof and portions of the historic structure.
German authorities arrested a 33-year-old German man in connection with the investigation. Police reportedly encountered the suspect riding a motorcycle near the scene while emergency crews were responding.
Prosecutors said a preliminary psychiatric assessment indicated the suspect may be suffering from mental illness, and arrangements were being made to transfer him to a psychiatric facility. Investigators are also examining whether the fire may have been politically motivated.
Authorities have not publicly established a definitive motive, and the suspect has not been convicted of any crime.
Completed in 1938, the Eagle’s Nest survived World War II largely intact. The mountaintop building later became a popular tourist attraction and restaurant, opening to the public in 1952.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann has indicated that the historic landmark will be restored, although the full extent of the damage, reconstruction costs, and timetable remain uncertain.
The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
