Late Wednesday night, tragedy struck as a woman was fatally shot by her ex-boyfriend while she was having dinner and participating in a FaceTime call with three other individuals, according to a report from the West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD).
During the video call, one of the witnesses observed the victim being shot in the back and head, as detailed in the probable cause affidavit. The witness later positively identified the suspect, Keisean Shaw, from a photographic lineup. Shaw, 19, was subsequently arrested on a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm. However, he did not appear in court on Thursday morning due to being hospitalized since his discovery. Tragically, Shaw passed away at the hospital early that afternoon, as reported by the police department in an update.
WPBPD spokesperson Mike Jachles expressed sorrow over the incident, describing it as heartbreaking that 18-year-old Kelvi McCray lost her life to domestic violence. According to police reports, Shaw, described as McCray’s estranged boyfriend, had been in a relationship with her for over a year and was still residing in her home at the time of the incident due to a lack of alternative accommodation.
Detectives learned that Shaw had not taken the breakup well and had even threatened McCray with a gun the previous Tuesday night. Concerns escalated to the extent that police were alerted to be on the lookout for Shaw, resulting in a warrant being issued against him on charges including aggravated assault with a firearm and domestic battery by strangulation. A countywide alert was issued for Shaw, and police were actively seeking him.
The circumstances surrounding the deaths of McCray and Shaw will be determined by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office. Jachles emphasized the importance of seeking help for individuals experiencing domestic or dating violence, urging them to utilize available resources and support networks. If immediate assistance is needed, individuals are encouraged to call 911.
