Judge Barrett told Tina Peters “You are no hero.” “You’re a charlatan who has used, and continues to use, your former office to sell falsehoods that have repeatedly been debunked.”

Her attorneys have stated their intention to appeal.

Judge Matthew Barrett of the 21st Judicial District delivered a sharp rebuke of Peters before handing down the sentence, describing her as a self-serving, attention-seeking former official.

“You are no hero,” Barrett said to Peters. “You’re a charlatan who has used, and continues to use, your former office to sell falsehoods that have repeatedly been debunked.”

In August, Peters was convicted by a Mesa County jury on seven charges, including four felonies, for enabling unauthorized access to county voting equipment under her care in a baseless search for voter fraud. Her supporters have failed to provide any evidence of election manipulation involving the machines.

Mesa County Commissioner Cody Davis estimated the cost of Peters’ actions to taxpayers at $1.4 million, which includes her salary while she was barred from the elections office and the cost of multiple recounts conducted to confirm the accuracy of the county’s elections.
