The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif, citing alleged war crimes.
According to a statement, the ICC’s pre-trial chamber dismissed Israel’s objections to its jurisdiction and authorized the warrants. While the Israeli military claims Deif was killed in a July airstrike in Gaza, the ICC judges stated there are “reasonable grounds” to believe the three men bear “criminal responsibility” for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity during the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas. Both parties have denied the allegations.
Enforcement of the warrants will depend on the ICC’s 124 member states, which do not include Israel or the United States.
