Bakersfield Police Department Press Release Re: Police Shooting of Jason Boles

For Immediate Release September 23, 2023

We have posted a community debriefing regarding an officer involved shooting. The shooting took place on August 24, 2023, in the11300 block Andretti Avenue. The debriefing contains actual footage of the shooting and summations of information known to officers at the time. The debriefing video can be found on our website and all of the department’s social media platforms.

Chief of Police Greg Terry said, “The public has a legitimate interest in obtaining timely and accurate information about police shootings, and the Bakersfield Police Department is committed to making that information available. We will release the body worn camera footage of officers in critical incidents as soon as it is possible to do so without compromising an investigation. This is our commitment to accountability and professionalism.”

The Bakersfield Police Department officers who discharged their firearms are identified as Sergeant Dennis Eddy, Officer Brandon Price, and Sergeant Ryan McWilliams. Sergeant Eddy has been employed as a police officer with the Bakersfield Police Department for approximately 22 years. Sergeant McWilliams has been employed as a police officer with the Bakersfield Police Department for approximately 18 years. Officer Price has been employed as a police officer with the Bakersfield Police Department for approximately 5 years. Officer Price was struck by gunfire during the incident. He had a minor injury, received medical aid on scene, and has recovered from his injury.

As is the standard procedure, the officers were placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation into the use of force.

Previous Release August 25, 2023

The investigation into the August 24th, 2023, officer involved shooting which occurred in the 11300 block of Andretti Avenue is ongoing. The community member who initially called police was an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department reserve officer who lives in Bakersfield. On August 24th, 2023, at approximately 11:24 AM, the community member observed a suspicious person, an unknown adult male, approaching residences in a cul-de-sac in the 11300 block of Andretti Avenue. The community member contacted the suspicious person, and an exchange of gunfire occurred between the suspicious person and the community member.

When officers arrived on scene, the suspicious person discharged his handgun at responding uniformed officers.
At this point in the investigation, Bakersfield Police have not identified a victim of a burglary or location of a burglary related to this incident.

The Bakersfield Police Department is handling the criminal investigation. The Los Angeles Police Department is conducting an administrative investigation of the Los Angeles Police Department reserve officer.

A firearm was recovered from the deceased subject.
