The Berrien County Sheriff’s Office has released body camera video of Deputy Cal Landon fatally shooting Joshua B. Coffey in a shootout.

According to investigators, Deputy Landon was investigating a suspicious vehicle when he encountered Suspect Coffey.
Deputy Landon approached and asked for identification, to which the suspect replied that he didn’t have any but said it might be in the car.
Sheriff Charles E. Heit said the suspect then paused briefly in front of the vehicle before suddenly fleeing across the street, down a sidewalk, and into a nearby park. As Landon began to pursue him, the second suspect drove off in the vehicle.
During the chase, Landon radioed for backup and shouted commands, warning Coffey, “Stop or you are going to get Tased,” and ordering him to the ground.
At that point, Coffey turned to face the deputy, drew a gun from behind his back, and fired. Deputy Landon returned fire, fatally shooting Coffey.
