Michoacán state authorities report that regional police chief Cristal Hurtado and her two police escorts were shot and killed in an ambush by drug cartel gunmen in Pátzcuaro, Michoacán.
Police report that the two police officer escorts were also females and the criminals beheaded all three.
The gunmen also set fire to their police vehicle.
State authorities report that there have been 400 murders in Michoacán so far this year.
