Video circulating online shows an officer repeatedly punching the suspect while on the ground, though it’s unclear if the punches occurred before or after the shooting.

The incident took place around 2:20 p.m. Tuesday near Cherry and Baseline Avenues.

Fontana police officers were called to the scene after receiving reports that the suspect was using a pipe to damage property and attack a civilian, according to police.

Authorities say the suspect refused to comply with officers and attacked one of them with the pipe, leading to an officer-involved shooting.

The suspect was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. One officer was also hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
