Former Uvalde schools’ chief Pete Arredondo and officer Adrian Gonzales are the first to criminally charged in connection to the shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers.

Former Chief Pete Arredondo and Officer Adrian Gonzales have become the first law enforcement officials charged in what is widely regarded as an alleged botched response to the massacre at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022, which tragically claimed the lives of 19 fourth graders and two teachers.

On the day of the shooting, Arredondo, who headed the police force of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, was allegedly designated as the incident commander. Officer Adrian Gonzales was among the officers who responded from the school police force.

Despite the involvement of approximately 24 state, local, and federal agencies, with nearly 400 officers responding, law enforcement hesitated for 77 minutes before entering the classroom where the shooter had barricaded himself.

Throughout this time, officers remained in the hallway while the tragedy unfolded.

After the shooting, Arredondo stated that he was unaware he had been placed in charge of the response.

In January, the Department of Justice issued a critical incident review of the shooting, concluding that there was a delayed response in confronting the assailant. According to accepted police doctrine, officers are expected to immediately engage with an active shooter.
